Five Rhino Species Forever, It’s World Rhino Day!!

Annually, World Rhino Day is celebrated on September 22 to safeguard the five rare species of rhinos. Every year awareness is spread about the different species of rhinos and the danger they are facing. This day also celebrates the five species of rhinos namely, Greater One-horned, Javan, Sumatran, Black, and White rhino species.

The Rhino population is declining tremendously throughout time. Hence, to save the critically endangered majestic animal an attempt to save and spread awareness about the animal the day is celebrated every year.


In addition, the day offers NGOs, zoos, and the general public a chance to honor rhinos in their special ways. Due to the ongoing poaching and habitat destruction over many years, this day is celebrated to save the rhinos.


This year the theme of World Rhino Day is- “Five Rhino Species Forever”. The goal is to raise awareness about the importance of saving rhinos from danger to their lives. Rhinos are constantly under severe threat and this is because of industrialization, deforestation, and related human activities. Therefore, it becomes very important to raise awareness about the same, especially among the future generation.


In the year 2010, the day announcement was done by WWF South Africa to raise awareness, and preserve and protect the five rare species of rhinos from extinction.


This day is celebrated annually and has gained recognition on a global scale. World Rhino Day was first observed in the year 2011 and every year since then the day has been observed worldwide.


As part of the yearly commemoration, awareness is spread about rhino conservation and protection around the world as the rhinos are in danger and need to be safeguarded from climate change, poaching, and disturbance in their natural habitat. Most commonly, the three species of rhinos are critically said to be endangered namely, Javan, Black, and Sumatran.

Hence, based on the immediate need and the rhino population declining at an alarming rate, the conservation sites and habitats were made because the five species of rhinos should be protected without any compromise and require extra concern and care on the daily basis. The Rhino population has its own significance and plays a vital role in stabilizing the ecological balance.
